Unused Microchips, Motherboards, and Other Electronic Waste Make This Upcycled Watch Tick

Unused Microchips, Motherboards, and Other Electronic Waste Make This Upcycled Watch Tick

All images © Vollebak

Recent reports estimate that the world produced 53.6 million metric tons of electronic waste last year alone, a record high that’s expected only to rise. In an effort to prevent digging up precious materials like gold, silver, and aluminum just to return them to the ground later on as trash, the sustainable fashion brand Vollebak has introduced Garbage Watch.

As its name suggests, the upcycled timepiece is constructed with old motherboards, microchips, and computer parts, utilizing bright electrical cords as the strap with an open face and exposed mechanisms. “We’ve taken an ‘inside-out’ design approach with the Garbage Watch, making the functional inner workings highly visible,” said Vollebak co-founder Nick Tidball in a statement to Inhabitat. “Our aim was to reframe an often invisible and hazardous end of the supply chain, and make people think deeply about the impact of treating their wearables in a disposable manner.”

An undertaking in partnership with the Wallpaper* Re-Made project, the timepiece officially launches in 2021, although a waitlist is currently open. Until then, find more of Vollebak’s sustainable designs on Instagram.

Casa Capricho Branding by Estudio Albino

Casa Capricho Branding by Estudio Albino

Graphic design, branding, and packaging design by Estudio Albino for Casa Capricho.

Casa Capricho is a multidisciplinary space where different materials and techniques are brought together to create useful and decorative objects based on organic and handmade elements. Mexican design studio Albino was commissioned to create a new brand identity including stationery, communication, and packaging design. The goal of the graphic design concept was to reflect some influences from their cultural roots by setting sophisticated and contemporary accents. The blowing of dandelion has magical connotations. It’s a symbol of fulfilling a wish. Each part of its fragile seeds and cotton seeds dissolves and flows freely and delicately through the air in a beautiful spectacle that represents this wish.

Below you can find a few images of the sophisticated result. For more of the graphic design studio’s work, please visit their portfolio.

Justin Devillier is one of New Orleans’ most celebrated young chefs, recently winning the James Beard award. Justine is the highly-anticipated new restaurant from he and partner Mia Freiberger-Devillier (the husband-wife team behind La Petite Grocery and Balise).

We partnered with architecture and interior design studio Farouki Farouki to create this new Vieux Carré gem.

The menu uses the structure of a classic brasserie, but we subverted it with bold pops of color, odd typography, and irreverent woodcuts.

Hundreds of Symbols From Prehistory to Modern Day Comprise a Gold ‘S’ Screenprint by Seb Lester

Hundreds of Symbols From Prehistory to Modern Day Comprise a Gold ‘S’ Screenprint by Seb Lester

“S” (2020), metallic rose gold screenprint on black Plike art paper, 330 gsm, 24.4 x 24.4 inches. All images © Seb Lester, shared with permission

Centered on the letter “S,” an anachronistic print from Seb Lester (previously) blends hundreds of symbols into one embellished form. Rendered in metallic on black paper, the typographic piece captures an incredibly long timeline, from prehistory to the Dark Ages to the Renaissance to present day. Look closely and you’ll spot snippets of cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphics, emojis, and modern logos.

Based in Lewes, England, the artist and calligrapher channeled the heavily detailed marginalia and flourishes of illuminated manuscripts. “I have spent two decades studying the most beautiful examples of intricate letterform and ornamental design I can find. This letter ‘S’ is arguably the most intricate letterform that has ever been drawn,” he shares with Colossal.

Lester released a limited run of 150 gold screenprints, which currently are available in his shop. Check out the video below to see all of the piece’s gleaming intricacies, and follow the artist on Instagram to keep up with his latest releases.

Caravelle Beer Labeling by Graphic Design Studio Hey

Posted by Categories: Blog Comments are off for this post
Caravelle Beer Labeling by Graphic Design Studio Hey

Graphic design studio Hey has developed an eye-catching beer labeling design for Caravelle, which is based on striking graphics inspired by the Mediterranean landscape.

Based in Barcelona, Caravelle is a restaurant that caters to a wide range of modern tastes including dining, brunch, smokehouse, specialty coffees, and nano-brewery.

At the end of 2017, they wanted to expand the branding of their craft beer range. Their aim was to create a visual brand and packaging experience based on a single generic label with a clear identity that could be used for each different label in the existing range of six beers.

For the whole project, graphic design studio Hey created different labels that share the same revitalized design code. A landscape series of gradient layers with different color palettes that recreate the seasons and part of the daylights. This way, studio Hey has created a connection between the different ingredients and flavors of their beers. Below you can find a few images. For more, please visit the website of the graphic design studio Hey or follow them on Instagram.

How To Become a Graphic Designer?

Posted by Categories: Blog Comments are off for this post
How To Become a Graphic Designer?

This is the ultimate guide on how to pursue a career in the design industry and how you should start to become a successful graphic designer.

You’ve been creative all your life. From a very young age, you enjoyed drawing, painting, tinkering, and your self-made cards and collages on the birthday of relatives and friends were really something special for your age and the joyful reactions of the recipients were not just faked in contrast to such otherwise hated gifts. If this was you and you still feel the passion of creative expression deep inside you, a career in the graphic design industry might be the right choice for you.

Nothing is better than an academic education to become a graphic designer.

If you already googled this topic, you probably found many articles on how to become a graphic designer without going to school. For sure, there are graphic designers out there who have not attended a university or at least have learned the knowledge of graphic designing themselves but to be honest, going to university is definitely the best way to pursue the creative career of your dreams. Even if you have an exceptionally creative mindset, an extensive and globally recognized education as a graphic designer will set you up with the right set of skills and qualifications.

Before you can become a graphic designer, you mostly have to prove that you are suitable for this education. To do this, you usually have to create a portfolio of your own work and submit it to the respective educational institution. Certain topics and contents for the creation of this design portfolio are often given by the educational institution. In addition, some schools and universities conduct one or more entrance exams. So you really have to show that you can do it if you want to be a graphic designer.

Below you can find some of the best Graphic Design Schools in the world.

  • Pratt Institute (Location: New York City, USA; Degree type: BFA)
  • Rhode Island School of Design (Location: Providence, USA; Degree type: BFA)
  • Parsons School of Design – The New School (Location: New York City, USA; Degree type: BFA)
  • School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Location: Chicago, USA; Degree type: BFA)
  • University of the Arts London (Location: London, UK; Degree type: BFA)
  • Royal College of Art (London, UK; Degree type: MA)
  • Politecnico di Milano (Location: Milan, Italy; Degree type: BSc)
  • Aalto University (Location: Helsinki, Finland; Degree type: BA)

This is just a small selection of some of the best schools you can attend to become a well-educated graphic designer. The annual tuition fees range from about $4,000 in Europe to almost $50,000 in the US. There are also significantly cheaper universities. As already mentioned, there is a very wide price range in different locations.

One of the main tasks of a graphic designer is to create graphic means of communication. These are, for example, company logos, websites or advertising. After completing your education as a graphic designer, you have many different business areas to choose from in which you can work—whether advertising agencies, branding studios, in the field of public relations or in the publishing industry, it’s totally up to you.

If you have decided to become a professional graphic designer, you can look forward to a great variety of creative tasks. You often have to collaborate with team members, clients, or creative directors. As a graphic designer, your work always has something to do with people. Your creations should awaken needs and be remembered.

Educate and inspire yourself and work with a setup that fits you perfectly.

In addition to going to school or university, you always should educate yourself—read the right books and all other types of publications. Sources of inspiration like blogs or social media are important to keep the fire aflame.

Having the right skills is nothing without the right setup including a computer with enough RAM, good graphics card, and the right screen. Furthermore, you need professional software. Adobe offers great deals for students—just have a look here. These are of course just a few basics that we have mentioned here. We can promise you that your equipment will grow according to your skills.

That was our go-to-guide on how to become a graphic designer. Please use the comments section for further information and questions or browse through our popular Graphic Design category for your daily source of creative inspiration.
