Japanese designer Tsuchiya Kaban’s latest leather bag provides an elegant, luxury vessel tote around your fruit. Holding exactly one, round watermelon, the carrier was crafted by Yusuke Kadoi as part of a project titled The Fun of Carrying, which encouraged designers to create playful, inventive items as side projects. Graphic design and re-branding by Toormix Design Agency for Kariiou, a brand specializing in a great variety of paper products.

Located in Yiwu, China, Kariiou is a brand specializing in diverse paper products. The creative team of Barcelona-based Toormix Design Agency was asked to work on a renewal of the existing brand identity with the aim to enhance the company’s image as a key player of the sector with a presence and distribution throughout the entire world.

Kariiou’s expansion strategy required the consolidation of the product catalog in several markets. The main objective was to make it a recognizable brand at several points of sale. Let’s take a closer look at the specimen book of the Aeonik Pro font family from CoType foundry.

When developing Aeonik Pro, the creative folks of CoType foundry took their best-selling font-family ‘Aeonik’ and refind it further while adding support for Cyrillic and Greek characters. As a result, Aeonik Pro is now even sharper, firmer, and more versatile than ever before. Please read more below.

Aeonik’s Pro version consists of seven weights ranging from Air to Black. Each style comes with a matching Italic version. The complete family comprises over 900 characters as well as lots of alternates to choose from.

In order to help showcase the font family, CoType collaborated with Semiotik Design in Greece to create two specimen books. The small book (approx A6 in size) mainly focuses on the glyphs and sculptural expression within Aeonik Pro while the large book in A4 showcases the possibilities and visual expression of this extensive typeface.

Art direction and graphic design by Guud Studio for restaurant, Out of China.

Specializing in graphic design, art direction, and branding, Guud Studio is a Barcelona-based office working with a wide variety of clients. Their creative team was asked to work on a new brand identity for a local Asian restaurant named Out of China. Founded in 2002, the restaurant offers a pioneering Chinese menu mixing traditional dishes with contemporary flavors as well as exotic aromas with local ingredients.

The graphic design concept of the brand identity is inspired by the colors and lights from the interior of the restaurant consisting of royal blue, bright red, dark furniture, and wood. The neon signs from the exterior inspired the designers to create a visual structure with vertical titles while the delicate aromas of the oriental cuisine were captured to design volatile textures that masterfully decorate the surfaces.

Beyond the scratch of the pen on paper, drawing as a practice isn’t thought to be particularly rhythmic or melodic. An inventive machine by musician Lamond Campbell, though, adds a musical component to its looped sketches. The Harmonograph Synthesiser is exactly as its name suggests: Campbell connected a modern, modular synthesizer to an 18th-Century harmonograph, an antiquated apparatus that uses pendulums to render geometric shapes. Two of the swinging mechanisms move linearly with the pen, while the third rotates with the board. Each triggers the synthesizer when movement occurs, which creates the corresponding audio track. An additional microphone picks up the noise of the pen.

Hatra, Al-Jazīrah, Iraq

Evoking a bit of time-travel, NeoMam (previously) recently animated a series of gifs that restore impressive, human-made structures around the globe to pristine condition. Although the six landmarks are now in some form of decay and have made UNESCO’s list of endangered world heritage, the short clips digitally reconstruct the sites to show what they’d look like had they not faced the ravages of time.

Included in this round of restoration are a remnant of Hatra, a large fortified city that was capital of the first Arab Kingdom, and the hundreds of islets that make up Nan Modol in Micronesia. UNESCO designated these landmarks in danger because of natural and human-generated threats like earthquakes, military conflict, and urbanization. Dig into the history behind the six restorations, which were completed in partnership with BudgetDirect and architect Jelena Popovic, in addition to other at-risk locations on UNESCO’s site.
