Making posters is so much fun that he just can’t get enough of it. Through diverse poster projects, he tries to challenge himself. The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) has been keeping an archive of posters designed by students and faculty over the past 50 years. The posters, which document the many performances and exhibitions held at the art school since its founding in 1970, were recently collected in a book and are virtually on view in Inside Out & Upside Down: Posters From CalArts 1970–2019 at REDCAT. The colorful pieces of paper have been a way for the school to reflect on its relationship to contemporary graphic design, including blind spots.

Ahead of the exhibition’s opening in August, CalArts alumni Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton and Silas Munro decided to organize a Black alumni and student response to the CalArts show.

“As we found when preparing for the exhibition, an estimated 1% of all design alumni from CalArts are Black,” Arceneaux-Sutton and Munro said over email. After connecting with CalArts professor Michael Worthington, they decided to organize a series of events that not only addressed the lack of inclusion and representation at CalArts, but in the field of graphic design in general. 

“There are only 3–5% of working design professionals that are Black,”  Arceneaux-Sutton and Munro explain. “This has grown incredibly slowly from 1% of the working designers in the 1950s.” A major cause of this is the prohibitively high cost of design education. 

This leads us to wonder: What if we got to see more diverse design in the world? You’ll have the chance to reflect on this on Wednesday, September 30, when artist Sarah Faith Gottesdiener, graphic design professor Daniela Marx, and designer Mindy Seu all share how they’ve used graphic design to “challenge the status quo.”

Branding and art direction by graphic design studio Human for Nineteen Ten, a Mexican restaurant and cantina located in London, UK.

Nineteen Ten is a Mexican restaurant and cantina situated in London, UK. Its name is derived from the year that was the start of the Mexican revolution.

Graphic design studio Human was commissioned to create a brand identity based on a graphic proposal that alludes to traditional Mexican patterns with a modern approach. The designers wanted to create a visual identity without using typical Mexican cliches. They found inspiration in “barro negro” a traditional pottery pattern from Oaxaca. Along with a colorful and memorable palette inspired by renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragan, the pattern has been applied throughout the entire graphic system. Just have a look below. Graphic design and branding by Andrea Bianchi for the RiAperto festival.

Graduated at the European Institute of Design (IED) in Milan, Andrea Bianchi is a graphic designer with amazing skills. In 2019, he was asked to work on a brand identity for the RiAperto festival.

In Milan, there were canals that ran through the city, connecting places, and people. In 2019 they have been reopened (“riaperto” in Italian). During the construction, several events took place all over the city. The identity, starting from the shapes of the canals, embraces the energy of RiAperto while bringing the canals to life with several colorful abstract patterns. Just see it for yourself. London-based studio The Luminor Sign Co. was tasked with bringing an old cab to life with a custom paint job that was drawn up and painted by hand.

In the wake of the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak, the owners of The Prince Arthur decided to keep spirits up by delivering alcoholic drinks to local residents in London’s East End. To do so, they decided a classic ‘Sherbert Dab’ (Cockney Rhyming Slang for a black cab) would be the perfect vehicle for the job.

Luminor Sign Co., a London based studio specializing in hand-lettered design and signwriting was commissioned with bringing the taxi to life with custom paintings drawn up and painted by hand.
